In our programs we spend a lot of time learning to scan the body in great detail – so that we can detect even subtle changes in the body. Why is this helpful? We feel our emotions through the body – we say I FEEL sad/anxious/happy…we dont say “I think anxious”! To manage emotions we need to be aware of the inner landscape so that we can notice small changes as they occur. For example if we can notice the sensations that start to arise when I am getting angry then I can manage my reactivity and avoid an explosion that not only feels horrible to me but also to those around me. I can choose a more measured response that will probably produce a better result. Learning through body scanning to notice sensations for what they are – just sensations is a poweful skill to build the non-reactivity muscle!
